A charity run by volunteers to help victims of rape and sexual abuse has been given a cash donation by a regional builder to help with their work.

Persimmon Homes North London has donated £1,000 to the Watford Rape Crisis & Sexual Abuse Centre through its Community Champions scheme.

The charity applied to the monthly match-funding scheme for a donation to help fund a training course for new volunteers this year after already raising money through various fundraising methods, such as selling Christmas cards, craft gifts and an Easter hamper raffle.

Frances Lehane, spokeswoman for the centre, which offers confidential, professional support for survivors of rape, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse, said: “We do not have any paid staff and the centre is totally run by volunteers. We depend on fundraising and donations, therefore being chosen to receive this donation is an incredible boost for us.”

The charity also offers limited support for the families, friends and partners of those affected by sexual violence.

“We take referrals from the police, GP surgeries and well-being centres and also run a helpline service and counsel by Skype those clients that cannot attend the centre. Obviously, for many people we offer much-needed support and guidance and we cannot thank Persimmon Homes enough for their donation,” added Frances.

Damian Seddon, Director in Charge of Persimmon Homes North London, said: “It is hard to quantify the support that a group such as Watford Rape Crisis can offer and their application stood out amongst the many that we receive every month. We are delighted to be able to support the volunteers.

“If people were unsuccessful last month in their Community Champions application, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next recipient.”
